LURREAN

HOUSE

The Lurrean House is constructed of unfired earth block. In keeping with our belief in the use of locally sourced materials, earth from the site itself, which has properties that are perfect for controlling heat and humidity, was employed in building the load bearing walls. This type of architecture gives the building the nobility of the old bourgeois houses and the robustness of a typical century-old farm in the Basque Country. The natural materials used and this silent process of building, done without machinery, allow the house to discreetly blend into the very landscape from which it came.

To create an annex to the main house and enlarge its garden, we proposed a semi-underground studio, invisible from the house and accessible from down by the pool below. Its roof becomes a sun deck and garden from which the view of the pine forest can be enjoyed. The roof keeps the space cool in summer, while the highly glazed south façade brings warmth and natural light to the interior.

TERRIER

LUTHÉREAU

BIOCLIMATIC

HOUSE

The objective of the project was to design a semi-prefabricated housing unit (a part handmade in mud and a part prefabricated in wood) using local materials following traditional construction techniques, but improving its energy efficiency. The product of this study is a building for a "new market economy", which promotes self-building with the active participation of users. This building is characterized by moderate use of technology, reasonable construction costs, high energy efficiency and low environmental impact.
